During Working Hours
Be vigilant and look out for people loitering or customers acting suspiciously
Do not your valuables unattended
If you see anything or anyone suspicious, report it immediately to a security or law enforcement officer
Take extra care when opening and closing a business during non-working and holiday hours
Always perform a final internal and external check of your premises before leaving
Avoid depositing monies through bank ATM’s and vary the times you visit the bank
Turn off all small electrical appliances, including computers, prior to leaving the building
Ensure all confidential and valuable items are securely locked away in a vault or safe
Train employees on alarm system procedures and ensure emergency contact numbers are readily available
Leave adequate lighting on
Place any cash in the safe and leave the cash register drawer open
Ensure your alarm system is turned ON

Speak to your insurance agent and ensure you have adequate cover

While out shopping
Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
Always park in a well-lighted area
Lock your vehicle
Store any valuables out of sight, either in the trunk or covered by a screen type device
Do not carry too many packages
Keep your wallet, purse or cash safely in an inner pocket
Don’t carry large amounts of cash

If you go out for the evening
Make the house appear lived in by leaving on lights and the TV or radio
Ensure all windows and doors are securely fastened
Buy a home alarm system and ensure you set it each time you leave the house unoccupied
Fit sensor lighting at entrances and driveways

When going away on holiday or business
Buy an automatic timer to turn your lights on and off

Give your neighbor a key and ask him/her to check the property regularly. By parking a vehicle in the drive or shoveling away snow they can give the appearance that the property is occupied.
Stop mail, newspaper and milk deliveries for the duration of your absence
Although it’s nice to tell people you’re going away, be vigilant when you do. You never know who might be listening!
Avoid displaying your home address in a prominent place on luggage tags especially on your outward journey
